NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was originally created to help other countries fight against communism.
Berlin AirLift
When the Soviet Union ordered a blockade on land, water and other sources in Germany, the United States needed some way to get resources to their troops. They sent planes over to the troops carrying the supplies. The Soviet Union allowed this because they didn't think the U.S. would see it through. When they did, the Soviet Union lifted the blockade.
Korean War
This invasion caught the Americans by surprise because they didn't expect the Soviets to go any further. The Americans did not want to let the Koreans down, but they did not want to start another possible WWIII. In the end, the North Koreans lost but there was and still is a 2 mile demilitarized zone that separates North Korea from South Korea.
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis brought the U.S and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war. When Fidel Castro befriended the leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Krushchev, they instantly began to work together. Krushchev decided to place missiles in Cuba to increase their accuracy in case of a war against the U.S. When President Kennedy discovered these missiles, he threatened Cuba and the Soviet Union with a nuclear weapon. The two countries slowly backed away and the Soviet Union removed the missiles from Cuba.

Vietnam
The Vietnam war was referred to as "America's longest war." The wanted to protect Vietnam from communism. They sent aid to the Vietnamese but in the end, one side of Vietnam was communist anyway.
